Bipolar Supporter – Are You a Positive Influence?

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <=

Hi ,

How are you today?

I hope you are fine.

I want to talk about heroes
for a minute.

When kids are little, they
inevitably pick people (or
cartoon characters) that they
look up to as a hero...

Like Magic Johnson.

Or like Superman.

These are people they would
like to be like.

So these people have an
influence on that child.

Hopefully, they will have a
positive influence.

Hopefully, this will carry over
into their choice in friends, too.

Their friends should be a positive
influence on them.

Adults have "heroes" as well -
maybe not on as grand a scale
as children do, but there are
people we look up to, who would
be considered positive influences
in our lives.

So let's talk about you.

Are you a positive influence on
your loved one?

Just being a supporter is not
enough.

You have to provide a good
example that your loved one can
follow.

For example, if you take medication,
being consistent in taking your
own meds will positively influence
your loved one to take theirs.

Same thing with going to appointments.

If they see that you consistently
go to your own doctor (and possibly
therapist) appointments, it may
positively reflect on them.

How about your emotions?

Do you stuff your anger down inside
until it explodes one day?

Or do you take care of it right
away, either by talking to your
loved one or someone else, or
writing it out in your journal?

Your loved one will copy what
you do, so you need to set a good
example.

You need to be consistent.

Because they need to learn to be
consistent, especially as far as
their medication goes.

They need to take their medication
in order to avoid episodes.

And you can be a positive influence
there.

How are you at playing "cheerleader?"

Your loved one needs someone to
cheer them on to victory (stability
with their bipolar disorder).

Do you praise your loved one
when they do the right thing?

Do you point out when they may
need to change something?

Do you love them unconditionally
and let them know that?

Do you help them when they
need help and NOT enable them
if they don't need help?

Are you a good sounding board
for them and their thoughts and
ideas, so that they make good
decisions?

Are you maintaining good
communication between the two
of you?

Are you conveying your support
through your positive attitude
and optimism?

The ultimate goal of everything
you do should be to be a good
example, and a good supporter,
so that your loved one will get
better.

The ultimate goal is stability
for your loved one with
bipolar disorder.

Are you being a positive, good
influence on your loved one?

What types of things are you
doing to further their stability?
