Borderline Personality? Planning Strategies
Published: Wed, 02/17/10
Hi ,
How's it going?
I hope you're doing well
today.
I was reading an
article earlier about
planning an event.
It set up four
important points
to remember while
planning.
The first was
simply to have a plan.
It stated how
dangerous it was to
just "wing it."
The second step was
to understand the situation
surrounding the event.
For example, if it was
a child's birthday party,
then it would be a very
different party from
an adult cocktail party.
The third thing they
mentioned was to not
go overboard.
It is very easy to get
carried away when you
are planning something,
but it is not always
appreciated.
Lastly, it mentioned
that you shouldn't blow
important things off.
They used the example
of a guest having special
needs that should be
planned for ahead of time.
I started thinking,
all of these steps are
essential when planning
strategies for how to
deal with it when your
loved one has an
episode.
First off, it is essential
that you have a plan
in case it happens.
Just guessing what
to do when it happens
is a bad idea.
It is also important
to understand the situation.
If you haven't already,
do what you can to learn
about borderline personality
disorder, and to learn
your loved one's triggers.
Knowing what to expect
will help you handle
the situation better.
Another important thing
is to not go overboard.
Not every situation
needs the most extreme
set of solutions.
For example, not every
episode needs an
ambulance ride to the
hospital.
Don't blow important
things off.
While it is true that
you shouldn't go overboard
on things, it is just as true
that you shouldn't
under-react to the
situation either.
For example, should your
loved one get to the point
of harming themselves,
then it calls for
immediate attention,
usually from a doctor.
The best way you can
handle a situation
is to remain calm.
If you become
emotional, then you
will have a harder time
dealing with the
situation appropriately.
If you can remain calm,
and if you follow the
plan you made ahead
of time, then you can
get through the situation
with as little problems
as possible.
What can you do to
make a plan for if a
situation arises?
Your Friend,
Dave
