Borderline? Have You Been Looking for This?
Published: Mon, 05/24/10
Hi ,
How's it going?
Hope you are doing well.
I was around kids this week.
They were completely "into" these videos
about fairy tales.
There were all sorts of them, most of them
by Disney.
And the storyline was predictable in all of
them.
I'm sure you've seen them.
They're mostly about damsels in distress.
Sometimes a handsome man comes along
and rescues her, and sometimes she has to
get herself out of the situation.
Regardless of how it works out, it always
works out.
There are never any fairy tales about things
that fall apart and are never fixable.
At least, not the way Disney tells it.
But these children I was around believed
it completely, like it was pure fact.
They literally had no idea that life wasn't
like that.
It was to the point that if you asked one of
those girls what would happen if they ever
got taken away by a stranger, they would
have told you that a prince charming would
come and save them.
Now, children are priceless, and I know
they don't know any better.
But when you stop to think about it, the
logic just doesn't add up.
Coming from a child, I guess no big deal.
Can you imagine that same kind of
mentality coming from an adult, though?
Unfortunately, it does happen.
And one of the common places for it to
happen surrounds mental illness.
People tend to think that everything should
just "be okay."
End of story.
Or, at worst case scenario, that it just needs
a little work and it can be perfect again.
Realistically, when talking about mental
illnesses, things don't become better just
because we want them to.
It'd be nice, wouldn't it?
But that's not the reality we live in.
And it's even more so the case when we
are talking about borderline personality
disorder.
The different ways that borderline personality
disorder messes up a person's life can't just be
"willed away."
People aren't just going to forgive a person
of everything they do when they're in an
episode just because they have borderline
personality disorder.
Jobs aren't going to magically take a person
back as soon as they come out of the
episode they were in.
Schools aren't going to erase "F's" that
were earned just because someone has an
excuse.
It doesn't even matter that it's a good
excuse.
People who have borderline personality
disorder can't wish it away.
It doesn't work that way.
And neither can their supporters, either!
Although we would certainly like to.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are
certainly things that can be done about
borderline personality disorder to make it
at least more manageable.
Many times a person will even manage to
re-gain stability after a period of following
their recovery plan.
But it doesn't happen just by nice wishes,
good intentions, or magic.
It doesn't come easy.
And as far as I'm aware of, no one rides
off into the sunset on a white horse.
LOL.
So what have you been looking for?
Have you been looking for the magical
fairy-tale method - the easy way out?
Or have you been looking at things more
realistically?
What are your thoughts on that?
Your Friend,
Dave
