Borderline? What Can Unemployment Rates Teach Us?
Published: Wed, 04/14/10
Hi ,
How's it going?
I hope you're doing well today.
Have you heard all of the talk about
the United State's unemployment rates?
They are always labeling how bad the
problem is.
Sometimes it seems like they don't do
anything to work on solving the problem.
I think that's a bad sign when someone
would rather label a bad thing than fix it.
Isn't that a scary thought?
What if we were too focused on labeling
the disorders we have to deal with, instead
of treating their symptoms?
Unfortunately, some people are.
Some people would rather blame
everything on their loved one's borderline
personality disorder, and explain away
all of the symptoms.
What does that do towards treating those
symptoms?
Nothing!
That is why it is incredibly important that
we focus on treating the symptoms.
After all, there's no way to treat a label.
And since there's no "cure" for borderline
personality disorder, there's no point in
trying to treat it as a whole.
But if we can minimize each of the
symptoms, then we can experience a
wonderful thing called recovery.
Isn't that a nice thought?
We would all like to be there.
To have our loved ones well into the
recovery process, or even ourselves to be
well within the recovery process.
So how do we get to that point?
How do we get to the point where recovery
is a real possibility?
We have to start by treating the symptoms
with every way we know how.
We have to build a recovery team to help
us in the process, as some people will be
able to treat symptoms differently than
others will.
One of those people is a psychiatrist.
They can treat the symptoms of borderline
personality disorder with medications.
What medication they choose will depend
on the symptoms that each individual
person displays.
Another person in the recovery team that
can treat symptoms in a unique way is the
therapist.
There are several different kinds of
therapists that might be involved,
conducting several different kinds of
therapy.
Regardless of what type of therapy it is,
it should be focused on the symptoms that
are displayed in that individual.
Believe it or not, another person in the
recovery team who is essential and can
treat their symptoms in a unique way is
called a supporter!
That's right, you are needed and can do
things that others cannot.
For example, you can help your loved one
get to treatment when they don't want to.
You can watch them on a daily basis for
the return of symptoms during times when
they haven't had any.
You can walk them through individual
episodes as they happen.
You can show by example, by trust, and
by pure repetition.
Now, here's an important person to
remember when creating a recovery team:
your loved one!
If they're not involved in treating their
own symptoms, then any help that anyone
else has to give won't be of nearly as much
help as it would have been otherwise.
So when we get down to focusing on
symptoms, can we expect incredible
results?
Well, it depends on what you mean by
incredible.
We can expect to minimize the symptoms,
and to lead a better life because of it.
We can expect to have better relationships.
We can expect to have a better view of
self.
We can expect to have an easier time
caring for our loved ones as their symptoms
decrease.
We can expect a return to work, school,
and other important activities, when the
symptoms get minimized enough.
We can expect a lot of things, and we can
achieve a lot of things.
The best way to do that is to pay attention
to the symptoms, and treat them, instead
of focusing on labels.
Now what do you think of that?
Your Friend,
Dave
